Kalispell Fire Department in front of the Elks Building, Kalispell, 1925. The aquisition of motorized vehicles in 1914 reduced the community's fire insurance rates. The pump shown in this photograph, the largest in Montana at the time, delivered 1000 gallons per minute. In the 1930s, full-time firemen replaced the volunteers.
Kallispel Hotel, with a large flashing sign that faced the railroad depot in the 1920s. The hotel was built in 1911 to serve well-to-do travelers. In 1924, Montana author Frank Bird Linderman purchased the business and managed it for several years. during this period he ran unsuccessfully for the United States Senate. Profits from the sale of the hotel allowed Linderman to continue his writing.

This 224-page hardcover volume features more than 320 historic photographs of the Flathead Valley, many of which have never before been published. The accompanying text, by Columbia Falls historian Kathryn L. McKay, outlines Flathead Valley history from the 1880's to the 1950's.
