Rock guardrail construction on the west side of Going-To-The-Sun Road, 1934. This road connected the east and west sides of Glacier National Park in 1933. The Theodore Roosvelt Highway over Marias pass was finished in 1930, and the federal highway connecting Missoula and Kalispell was completed in 1932. These roads all encouraged people to visit the park by automobile rather than by train. Visitaion increased dramatically.
First Kalispell police car, with officers Adam Yuill, Fred Stryker, Levi Gaustd, and Hector Noble, 1936 or 1937. Kalispell's early police officers had a variety of duties. They delivered wood to the poor in winter, raided hobo jungles, regulated traffic, and attempted to enforce health regulations through clean up campaigns. The also collected a monthly tax from prostitutes and license fees from saloon owners.

This 224-page hardcover volume features more than 320 historic photographs of the Flathead Valley, many of which have never before been published. The accompanying text, by Columbia Falls historian Kathryn L. McKay, outlines Flathead Valley history from the 1880's to the 1950's.
