| Reflections on Mike Kirkland |

|
I first met Mike Kirkland in Canyonlands National Park, when we
were both starting out at the University of Utah Art Department. He
quietly drew sandstone formations while raucus partying went on around
him.
Awhile later, he modelled for his friend Pat Eddington who was doing a very well-received series of drawings about clowns. In 1973, I asked Pat for permission to use his image of Kirkland on a poster for a show I was involved with at Salt Lake City's most prestigious theater -- Ariel Ballif, Tom Carlin, and Stu Falconer's Theater 138 at 138 South 200 East (now a parking lot). I knew Mike more as Pat's friend, than part of his social circle, but he was usually doing something amazing. Mike worked at the Museum of Fine Arts, made excellent pottery, multimedia art with Dave Brothers, and films with Larry Roberts. He also was involved with the Punk Rock scene early, along with Steve MacAllister, a first-rate technician and musician. These two weren't just playing around -- they went to New York City in 1983, worked at CBGB's itself, and made their own music in a group called Damage. |
Damage boasts a MySpace site, with good and LOUD
music -- Kirkland & MacCallister are still involved, and I heartily
recommend tuning in:
