1: The Saturday serial of 1940 lit up the screen with
sparkling rocketry!

|
Zarkov,
Flash and Dale start their third Saturday serial aloft
in a Rocket Ship over Planet Earth before zooming
off to Mongo's forests.
|
The
Earth People were still fighting on, above, and inside
Mongo in the Sunday newspapers. |
Zarkov
spots a Rocket Ship from Planet Mongo spreading deadly
Purple Death dust in Earth's atmosphere.
|
Flash
first encountered the forests of Mongo after his Undersea
Kingdom adventures in 1936. |
Zarkov
initiates the first of many smoky dogfights. Ming's
goons flee back to Mongo, bearing false rumors of
Zarkov's destruction while he secretly follows them.
|
Our
heroes were shot down and straffed by Rocket Ships of
Ming the Merciless as they approached the Forest Kingdom
in the newspapers. |
The
Earth People secretly land in Arboria, Forest Kingdom
of Mongo, to seek the aid of their old ally Prince
Barin in 1940.
|
The
Earthlings barely survived Mongo's jungles before Barin's
patrols rescued them in 1936. |
Harboring
Dale, Flash, and Zarkov was a revolutionary act in
both strip and serial --
meaning war with Aura's megalomaniac father.
|
Prince
Barin is svelte, and dressed like a royal version of
Robin Hood. He's lost about twenty inches of girth,
and four inches of height. He's also being played by
a whole new actor. |
Prince
Barin's well-grounded palace resembles a Bohemian
edifice from the novel A Prisoner of Zenda.
|
KING
Barin built his city in one of the higher canopies of
Arboria to minimize danger. |
The
elegant gowns and uniforms worn inside Prince Barin's
palace recall movies like The Student Prince
and Merry Widow.
|
The
serial introduced Fria, Queen
of Frigia,
early. She
was a latecomer in the Sunday pages. |
