Flash Gordon Conquers Universal Pictures: The 3rd Serial
Ch. 4: Hail Frigia, A Frigid Hell -- Searching for Elusive Polarite

The Earthlings fled to Frigia with Prince Ronal to take the heat off Arboria in 1939.

Flash, Dale, and Zarkov lead an expedition to Frigia in search
of the exotic compound Polarite during the 1940 serial.

A whole new miniature set awaits our
heroes as they land their Rocket Ship in frozen Frigia.

Flash's Rocket Ship made a
forced landing due to ice
in the Sunday strip

Trouble always found the fugitives -- they
abandoned ship before glacial ice crushed them.

Flash, Dale, and some Arborians, with maybe a
Frigian guide or two, go searching for trouble -- uh, Polarite.

A brigade of skiers rescued
Ronal and the Earth People in 1939.

The opening credits of 1940 always end with two slick sequences
featuring soldiers on skis, but these guys never appear in the serial.

An avalanche buried the Rocket Ship which
carried Flash, Dale, Zarkov, and Ronal in 1939.

One of Ming's Rocket Ships starts an avalanche that nearly
burries Flash, Dale, Prince Barin, and new character Roka in 1940.

The fugitives cooled their heels in an ice cave before Queen Fria and her crew rescued them.

Flash Gordon's contingent falls into a crevasse, luckily
cushioned by tumbling snow. Prince Barin is the only one injured.

The 1940 serial features a literally COOL flare-lit nighttime rescue scene, which has no equivalent in the strip.

The Earthlings get busy mining Polarite right away in 1940.

Flash Gordon spent a year with Fria from 1939-40.
